As we reach the Packers' bye week at the midway point in the season, it's a fitting time to recognize the standout performers so far. In these midseason superlatives, I’ll highlight the Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Offensive Player of the Year: Josh Jacobs
My pick for Offensive Player of the Year is running back Josh Jacobs. Through nine games, Jacobs has racked up 762 rushing yards, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Although he’s only reached the end zone three times, his impact is undeniable, with six rushes of 20+ yards so far. Many initially questioned whether acquiring Jacobs was the right call for the Packers, but his value becomes clear when the team has had to lean on
the run game, especially when backup quarterback Malik Willis is in. Despite defenses expecting the run, Jacobs consistently breaks off sizable gains, putting the offense in favorable situations. As he continues to adjust to the system and build chemistry with the offensive line, I anticipate his production will only improve. Notably, Jacobs has achieved this success despite only one offensive lineman, Zach Tom, having a Pro Football Focus (PFF) run-blocking grade above 50. Midway through 2024, Jacobs sits third in the league for rushing yards, trailing only Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley.
Defensive Player of the Year: Xavier McKinney
Currently tied for first in the league with six interceptions, Xavier McKinney has been both a ball hawk and a deep-ball deterrent. I’ve rarely seen a Packers free-agent acquisition make as immediate an impact as McKinney has. Along with his interceptions, McKinney has recorded 42 total tackles, one sack, seven passes defended, one fumble recovery, and 63 return yards on those interceptions. He’s always around the ball, and opposing quarterbacks have learned to avoid throwing in his direction. His game-changing impact through these nine games is the reason he stands out as my Defensive Player of the Year so far.
Offensive Rookie of the Year: Jordan Morgan
Selecting an Offensive Rookie of the Year has been challenging due to limited rookie contributions on offense. However, Jordan Morgan has logged the most snaps among offensive rookies and has shown potential, making some solid plays and blocks while also leaving room for improvement. As a first-round pick, Morgan’s development will be crucial, and Packers fans are eager to see him grow into a top-tier lineman under the coaching staff’s guidance.
Defensive Rookie of the Year: Edgerrin Cooper
This was a close call between Edgerrin Cooper and Evan Williams, but Cooper’s performance has been slightly more impactful. He has recorded 44 tackles, 2.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, two passes defended, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. Notably, Cooper holds the league’s highest PFF pass-rush grade among defensive rookies, with a score of 90. Though his snap count remains limited, he’s made a strong case for increased playing time. His speed, aggression, and playmaking ability make him a thrilling addition to this Packers defense.
These players have undoubtedly earned their midseason titles. I look forward to watching their continued growth and hope they maintain these honors through the remainder of the season.
