As of today, September 30, 2024, Brandon McManus has been cleared by the NFL to play and is now an available free agent. McManus had been under investigation following sexual assault allegations, but the league determined that there was insufficient evidence to warrant any disciplinary action.
While I personally do not believe McManus aligns with the type of character typically associated with the Packers—given the nature of the allegations—we do seem to have a need at the kicker position. At the very least, introducing some competition might motivate Brayden Narveson to improve his performance in the field goal department.
Throughout his 10-year career, McManus has appeared in 129 games, attempting 311 field goals and successfully converting 253 of them, achieving a field goal percentage of 81.4%. Additionally, he has attempted 321 extra points, making 312 of them.
Although I doubt the Packers will pursue McManus, it could be beneficial to bring in some competition to see who the coaching staff believes is the best fit as we prepare for the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams. The Packers have struggled with kicking consistency for some time, and while Narveson showed early promise, he has since frustrated fans by missing a field goal in every game this season.
If the Packers choose to stick with Narveson without bringing in additional support, fans will be hoping the team can help him correct his kicking mechanics—or at least adjust his placement, as he has consistently missed to the right.
Reflecting on the recent game against the Vikings, there were numerous factors that contributed to the loss, but as many of us know, one of those two missed field goals could have significantly impacted the game, particularly in the context of the Packers’ valiant attempt at a 28-point comeback.
